The January 2022 reader poll asked for opinions about the best ways to manage the highly transmissible variant, which now accounts for 99% of all new cases in the United States. Here are the results:
My thoughts: The results of this survey align with the divided views of our nation. Many Americans remain fearful of Omicron and want national policies in place—including mandates—to minimize risk. There’s also a sizable portion of the population that believes the unvaccinated have already made up their minds and that it’s time for our country to return to normal. Finally, there is a minority (15%, which is larger than I anticipated) who feel we should do nothing more to prevent the spread of Covid-19.
On “The Daily” podcast from the New York Times, host Michael Barbaro asked Dr. Anthony Fauci (repeatedly) whether laws and policies should continue to restrict the rights of the fully vaccinated in order to protect the unvaccinated. As we come out of the current Omicron surge, we will need to tackle this ethical question. This survey demonstrates how difficult it will be for our nation to reach a consensus.
